Herdade Pegos Claros

Setúbal

Producing very high quality wines since 1920, Pegos Claros Estate Farm was responsible in the 1990s for the production of wines which became renowned national and international as some of the best wines produced in DOC Palmela.

Our wines are produced to the same quality as those produced in the 1990s, with manual vintageing, fermentation with traditional foot treading in open “lagar”, oak ageing and made exclusively from old vines from the variety "Castelão".  Pegos Claros has the largest continuous vineyards of the Castelão variety in DOP Palmela. Planted in sandy soils and having no irrigation, the vines are often more than 90 years old. These factors, together with our viticulture and winemaking processes, produce lower yields but a very high quality end product.

The Herdade de Pegos Claros holds a commitment to keep our forests with environmentally consistent, socially beneficial and economically viable forestry. The cork oaks and tame pine trees that make up the forest area yield good quality cork and pine cones for pine nuts, in excellent conditions of profitability and productivity. Our cork oaks are relatively young, probably introduced in the 1930s in regular intervals. The tame pine trees area has undergone successive improvements and displays a regular distribution in various age categories.

Pegos Claros stands out especially for its extraordinary historical grapevines, mostly comprising centenary Castelão grapevines, a living testimony of one of the most appreciated territories of the registered designation of origin: the sandy soils of Palmela. By implementing viticulture based on biological processes and conservative enology, we obtain authentic, expressive, differentiated and very characteristic wines, that continue to amaze and captivate a legion of admirers and followers, both in the national and international markets
