Italy, Sicily

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, is one of Italy's most exciting and rapidly evolving wine regions, celebrated for its ancient winemaking heritage and the extraordinary diversity of its terroir. The island benefits from an abundance of sunshine, warm temperatures and cooling sea breezes from both the Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean coasts, creating ideal conditions for producing wines of real depth and character. Sicily is perhaps best known for its native Nero d'Avola grape, a variety of great richness and personality that thrives in the island's volcanic and clay-rich soils, producing wines of deep colour, ripe dark fruit and warm spice. The southeastern corner of the island, around Vittoria, is particularly celebrated, where the distinctive terra rossa soils and the moderating influence of sea air allow grapes to ripen slowly and develop exceptional complexity. Alongside its powerful reds, Sicily produces increasingly impressive whites from varieties such as Grillo and Catarratto, wines of real freshness and minerality that reflect the sea as much as the sun. Once viewed simply as a source of bulk wine, Sicily has firmly established itself as one of Italy's most compelling fine wine regions.
