Italy, Marche

Marche, stretching along the Adriatic coast of central Italy between the Apennine Mountains and the sea, is one of the country's most quietly impressive wine regions, producing wines of genuine character and identity that remain largely undiscovered by the wider world. The region benefits from a varied landscape of steep hillside vineyards, clay-rich soils and a climate shaped by the warmth of the Adriatic and the cooling influence of the mountains, creating conditions that allow both white and red varieties to express themselves with real clarity and freshness. Marche is home to some of Italy's most compelling indigenous grapes, none more so than Pecorino and Passerina, two white varieties of ancient origin that produce wines of aromatic complexity, vibrant acidity and long mineral finishes. For reds, Montepulciano and Sangiovese reign supreme, yielding wines of deep colour, ripe dark fruit and firm but elegant structure. The province of Ascoli Piceno in the south of the region is particularly noteworthy, where the Rosso Piceno Superiore designation produces some of the most concentrated and age-worthy expressions of Montepulciano in all of central Italy. For those willing to look beyond the better-known names of Italian wine, Marche rewards curiosity generously.
